Jack Lemmon Film Festival Starts Friday

The Stanford Theatre in Palo Alto will present a special three-week festi-val of Jack Lemmon films, honoring the actor who died Wednesday. Some Like It Hot will play at the Stanford Theatre for one week starting Friday, June 29, on a double bill with Jack Lemmon's very first film It Should Happen to You. The program for the second two weeks will be an-nounced soon. It will include The Apartment, The Notorious Landlady, and Avanti, among other films.

In June of 2000, the American Film Institute voted Some Like it Hot (1959) as number one on its list of "America's 100 funniest movies." The film was directed by Billy Wilder and stars Jack Lemmon, Tony Curtis, and Marilyn Monroe. It plays at 7:30 every day, with matinees at 3:40 on Satur-day and Sunday only.

It Should Happen to You (1954) was directed by George Cukor and stars Jack Lemmon, Judy Holliday, and Peter Lawford. In this wonderful romantic comedy, Gladys Glover puts her name on a billboard in Columbus Circle. Every day at 5:50 and 9:40.

The Stanford Theatre was built in 1925, the year of Jack Lemmon's birth. In 1987, the Packard Foundation purchased the historic theatre and restored it to its original splendor. The non-profit Stanford Theatre Foundation, which now operates the theatre, is dedicated to bringing back the original movie-going experience of Hollywood's Golden Age. More people watch classic films at the Stanford than at any other theatre in America.

This week, the National Trust for Historic Preservation (www.nthp.org) released its 2001 list of America's "most endangered historic places." The first item on this list is "Historic American movie theatres nationwide." The Stanford Theatre is a perfect example of this endangered species, and why it is worth saving.

Billy Wilder and Jack Lemmon made a personal appearance at the Stanford Theatre on March 26, 1994, in conjunction with a comprehensive Billy Wilder Festival.
